The UK is experiencing an extended spell of spring sunshine, with high-pressure systems bringing clear skies and warm temperatures. Southern regions have seen highs of 18°C, while the north has been slightly cooler with lingering cloud cover. Coastal areas remain cool due to sea temperatures, but inland regions are enjoying consistent sunshine. March 2025 also had mild conditions and plenty of sunshine, with temperatures reaching 20.6°C in Northolt, making it the hottest day of the year so far. The spring equinox brought peak temperatures across England and Wales, with Scotland experiencing highs of 14°C. The UK is currently basking in an extended spell of spring sunshine, thanks to high-pressure systems dominating the weather. This pattern has brought clear skies and warm temperatures, particularly to southern regions. In early April, highs of 18°C were recorded in southeastern England, while northern areas experienced slightly cooler conditions due to lingering cloud cover. Coastal regions remain breezy and cooler due to cold sea temperatures, but inland areas are enjoying consistent sunshine. High pressure situated northeast of the UK ensures stable weather, with minimal rainfall across the country.
March 2025 also saw unusually mild conditions with plenty of sunshine. Southern Britain benefited from settled weather, while northern and western regions experienced occasional rain and wind. The spring equinox marked a peak in temperatures, with Northolt recording 20.6°C on March 20, making it the hottest day of the year so far. This exceeded previous highs of 19.7°C in Crosby earlier in the month. Across England and Wales, temperatures reached up to 20°C, while Scotland enjoyed milder highs of 14°C.
The sunny spell coincides with the transition from astronomical winter to spring during the equinox. Day and night are nearly equal in length during this period, contributing to longer daylight hours that enhance the warmth. Historically, spring equinox temperatures have reached as high as 21.5°C in 1972, though this year’s peak fell slightly short of that record. Nonetheless, this prolonged sunny period has been well above average for this time of year.
As April progresses, high-pressure systems continue to dominate, ensuring dry and sunny conditions for most regions. While southern areas enjoy uninterrupted sunshine, northern Scotland may see occasional light rain clearing early in the week. The settled weather is expected to persist, providing a welcome respite from typical spring showers and cooler spells.
