US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Friday declined to comment on a Pakistani journalist's question regarding the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing India-Pakistan border tensions during a press briefing. When asked if former President Donald Trump was still willing to mediate between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir, Bruce firmly stated, "I am not going to be remarking on it... I will say nothing more on that situation." She emphasized that the President, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Deputy Secretary had already made their positions clear and refused to continue on the matter.
Bruce reiterated the US stance on the Pahalgam attack, expressing condolences and prayers for the victims and injured. She affirmed that the United States stands firmly with India and strongly condemns all acts of terrorism. The attack, which killed 26 people including tourists at Baisaran meadow in South Kashmir's Pahalgam, has been described as one of the worst since the 2019 Pulwama tragedy. President Trump personally called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer condolences, and Secretary Rubio publicly affirmed US support for India.
Following the attack, India took significant retaliatory diplomatic and security measures against Pakistan. These included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, downgrading diplomatic ties, revoking all visas issued to Pakistani nationals from April 27, and advising Indian nationals in Pakistan to return home. The Indian government also declared Pakistani defense advisors in New Delhi persona non grata and withdrew its own advisors from Islamabad. Prime Minister Modi vowed to "identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers" involved in the Pahalgam carnage and pursue them "to the ends of the earth".
The incident has further strained already tense India-Pakistan relations, with the US maintaining a clear position of support for India while avoiding direct commentary on mediation efforts. The US spokesperson's refusal to engage with the Pakistani journalist's question reflects Washington's current diplomatic stance amid heightened tensions following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
