A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy has resulted in at least 32 fatalities and over 90 injuries, including children, marking one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in recent years. Two Iskander-M ballistic missiles struck the city center at approximately 10:15 a.m. local time on Palm Sunday, as residents gathered for church services. The attack devastated buildings, vehicles, and public spaces, leaving bodies scattered amid debris. Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar described the tragedy as “horrific,” mourning the loss of innocent lives and calling for global solidarity with Ukraine.
Emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and recover victims from the rubble. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it an act of terror against ordinary civilians. He emphasized the need for international action, stating that diplomatic talks alone cannot stop Russia’s aggression. French President Emmanuel Macron also denounced the strike, labeling it a blatant disregard for human life and urging stronger measures to enforce peace. The EU Commission President echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the cruelty of the ongoing war.
The timing of the attack underscores its brutality, occurring during a significant religious holiday celebrated by many Ukrainians. Videos from the scene revealed rows of body bags and extensive destruction in Sumy’s city center. Local officials confirmed that among the casualties were two children, while at least ten minors were injured. Rescue operations remain underway as authorities continue to assess the full extent of damage and casualties.
This strike follows a pattern of intensified Russian offensives in northeastern Ukraine during its spring campaign. Sumy Oblast has been subjected to increasing missile attacks in recent weeks, with smaller settlements falling under Russian control. The assault comes amid stalled negotiations between Russia and Ukraine over ceasefire agreements, further complicating efforts to end the conflict.
