Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has narrowly avoided impeachment following a political firestorm triggered by the so-called "Rolexgate" scandal, in which she was accused of failing to disclose an expensive collection of luxury watches. The controversy raised serious questions about transparency and ethics at the highest levels of government, but a recent vote in Congress has allowed her to remain in office—for now.
The scandal erupted in March 2024, when investigative journalists revealed that President Boluarte had been seen wearing at least three high-end Rolex watches, raising suspicions about unreported assets and possible corruption. Critics questioned how a public official with a modest salary could afford such luxury items and whether the watches were gifts or linked to political favors.
In response to the growing pressure, Peru’s Congress opened an inquiry and debated an impeachment motion on the grounds of "permanent moral incapacity." The motion, however, failed to secure the 87 votes required for her removal, with many lawmakers citing insufficient evidence and the need for institutional stability.
Boluarte has maintained her innocence throughout the investigation, stating that the watches were personal property acquired legally and did not constitute any form of wrongdoing. In a televised address, she called the accusations politically motivated and urged the country to focus on pressing national issues such as economic recovery and crime reduction.
Still, the scandal has damaged her approval ratings and intensified public distrust in Peru’s political class, already fragile following years of corruption cases and political turnover. Protesters have taken to the streets in Lima and other cities, demanding greater transparency and accountability from government officials. Legal experts have noted that while the scandal might not have led to her impeachment, it highlights the urgent need for reforms in asset disclosure laws and anti-corruption enforcement.
