North Korea has officially confirmed for the first time that it sent troops to fight alongside Russian forces in the war against Ukraine. The announcement came from the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party, citing leader Kim Jong Un's decision to deploy combat troops under a mutual defense treaty signed with Russia in June 2024. According to state media KCNA, North Korean soldiers participated in operations to "annihilate and eliminate the Ukrainian neo-Nazi occupiers" and helped liberate the Kursk region, which had been occupied by Ukrainian forces.
The deployment reportedly involved around 10,000 to 14,000 North Korean troops, including special forces and officers, sent last autumn. These soldiers were trained in eastern Russia and equipped with Russian uniforms and identities to conceal their origin. Despite lacking armored vehicles and drone warfare experience, North Korean troops adapted quickly but suffered heavy casualties. South Korean and Ukrainian intelligence estimate that thousands of North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in the conflict, with figures ranging from about 1,200 to 4,000 casualties.
This military support reflects a deepening strategic partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow, described by North Korean officials as a "firm militant friendship" and an alliance of "all and brother." The comprehensive strategic partnership treaty obligates both countries to provide military assistance if either is attacked. Kim Jong Un praised the troops as heroes representing the honor of North Korea and announced plans to erect a monument in Pyongyang to commemorate their sacrifice.
The confirmation of North Korean involvement marks a significant escalation in the Ukraine conflict, drawing international attention and condemnation. The United States and other nations have called for an end to North Korea's military deployment in support of Russia. The move also signals Pyongyang's intent to strengthen ties with Moscow beyond immediate battlefield needs, aiming for a long-term alliance reminiscent of Cold War-era relations.
