The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is actively looking for a replacement for Jos Buttler, who resigned as England's white-ball captain following a string of poor tournament results. Buttler's resignation follows early eliminations from the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20 World Cups, as well as the recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Harry Brook is regarded as a serious contender for the captaincy because he has led the team in Buttler's absence and served as vice-captain. Brook's hiring is supported by former England captain Nasser Hussain, who highlights the value of taking a forward-looking attitude. Hussain does, however, recognize the possible strain on Brook in light of England's rigorous Test schedule, which includes an away Ashes series and a home series against India.
Ben Stokes, the current Test captain of England, is another possible option. Despite his recent recuperation from surgery, Rob Key, the director of men's cricket, has highlighted Stokes as a possibility. It might be difficult to balance Stokes' two leadership responsibilities, though. There has also been discussion about Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, but both have recently experienced form problems that could affect their potential for the position.
In order to improve the team's performance and handle the challenges of international cricket schedules, the ECB must choose a new white-ball skipper. Striking a balance between player workloads and leadership duties will be crucial to long-term success in all formats.
