India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will miss the upcoming T20 international series against England due to a back injury. At 31, Bumrah experienced back spasms during the fifth and final Test in Australia earlier this month, which prevented him from bowling in the second innings. His absence is expected to be a significant setback for India in the five-match T20 series, which begins on January 22.
On a positive note, fellow fast bowler Mohammed Shami is returning to the squad after more than a year out due to injury. Shami, who is 34 years old, has not played for India since the 50-over World Cup final in November 2023. Following that match, he underwent ankle surgery and dealt with knee issues, so his return will provide a much-needed boost to India's bowling attack.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been excluded from the 15-man T20 squad, likely to rest after participating in all five Tests in Australia. Additionally, batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have also not been included in the T20 squad. For the England series, India's options behind the stumps will be Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson. The team will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav.
Following the T20 series against England, India will play a three-match one-day international series, for which the squad has yet to be announced. This series will serve as important preparation for India ahead of the Champions Trophy. With Bumrah sidelined, India will need their other bowlers to rise to the occasion against a strong England side.
