Adobe has launched a free Photoshop app for iPhones, with an Android version coming later in 2025, aiming to make its powerful image editing and design tools accessible to a new generation of mobile-first creators. This move marks the first time that Photoshop’s iconic capabilities, including layering, masking, and blending, are available for free in a single mobile app, complete with a mobile-friendly interface. The company hopes to empower a younger audience, as well as provide existing users with the flexibility to edit on the go. While the desktop version remains the choice for precision editing on larger screens, the mobile app is tailored for those who create primarily on their phones and may be new to Photoshop.
The free app includes many standard and some advanced Photoshop features. Users can customize elements, make advanced edits, and utilize Adobe Firefly-powered AI tools for generative tasks. The “Tap Select” feature uses AI to automatically detect and emphasize objects, and users also have access to free Adobe Stock images. While some generative AI tools, like “Generate Similar,” require a subscription, the app retains classic tools like layers, the Healing Brush, and text tools. It supports the PSD format, ensuring compatibility with files created on the desktop version. This integration extends to other Adobe applications like Express, Fresco, and Lightroom, streamlining workflows across devices.
For users seeking more advanced capabilities, Adobe offers a Photoshop Mobile & Web plan. This subscription unlocks features for precise selections, targeted adjustments, advanced color corrections, and expanded access to Firefly-powered generative AI tools. It also provides full format support for opening and editing any Photoshop document. The mobile and web apps are designed with similar user experiences, allowing seamless transitions between devices. Photoshop on the web has been updated with an improved interface, direct integration with Adobe Stock, and expanded browser availability. Current Photoshop desktop subscribers receive access to Photoshop on iPhone and the web as part of their subscription.
Industry experts note that Adobe is betting on the increasing trend of creators using smartphones for their work. While Adobe has made previous attempts at mobile Photoshop apps like Photoshop Touch and Photoshop Express, this new offering is specifically designed for mobile devices. Competitors like PicsArt and Polarr have already established a presence in the mobile photo editing market, and even Apple Photos and Google Photos have incorporated AI features. However, Adobe is positioning Photoshop Mobile as a tool for professional image creators, although it is also accessible to enthusiastic users. Ashley Still, senior vice president, digital media at Adobe, expressed excitement about bringing Photoshop’s creative possibilities to a wider audience.
